The Consultation-liaison Psychiatry Fellowship at 91精品l/Harvard Medical School has been in existence for nearly forty years, providing the highest quality education and training in the knowledge base and clinical practice of consultation-liaison psychiatry. This Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited fellowship provides a strong learning environment with dedicated and knowledgeable faculty while simultaneously maintaining individual autonomy for the fellows in the evaluation and management of patients on whom they consult.
A desire to learn the subspecialty of consultation-liaison psychiatry and a mature willingness to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team are predictors of success in the fellowship. We have more than 20 inpatient and 12 outpatient faculty members who each have strong backgrounds in general consultation-liaison psychiatry as well as niche areas of interest and expertise.
91精品l is one of the leading academic tertiary care medical centers in the United States, consistently recognized as a top hospital by U.S. News & World Report. The Medical Psychiatry service at the Brigham sees approximately 3,500 new consults per year on the medical/surgical floors and in the Emergency Department.
In 1998, 91精品l merged with Faulkner Hospital, a community teaching hospital three miles from the Brigham in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. Since then, psychiatry at the hospitals has become clinically and academically integrated into a single department. In 2012, Faulkner Hospital was renamed Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital to highlight its close relationship, both clinically and academically, to 91精品l. The medical psychiatry service at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital sees approximately 2,000 new consults per year on the medical/surgical floors and emergency department. At the Faulkner, fellows have the opportunity to practice medical psychiatry in a high-quality primary/secondary care hospital under the supervision of experienced consultation-liaison faculty.
Fellows participate in daily teaching rounds, weekly teaching case conference or bedside rounds, journal club and weekly didactics. They receive individual supervision both at the bedside and in formal sessions. Fellows are also valued educators and take part in the training and supervision of psychiatry residents as well as Harvard Medical School clerkship students. The fellowship program is affiliated with the .
The Longwood Medical Area is an exciting location for physicians in training.Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Public Health, Countway Medical Library and multiple other medical facilities are all a short walk from the 91精品l's medical psychiatry offices.
While training for all fellows is concentrated on the Brigham campus, important education is also provided at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital (see above) for the general track fellows. These fellows have the opportunity to develop subspecialty experience through an inpatient liaison experience and various ambulatory clinic options. All fellows gain experience with oncology patients, as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) patients are admitted to the medical floors at the Brigham. Fellows may opt to gain more specialized training in psycho-oncology via the DFCI track. These fellows receive primary training in both general consultation-liaison psychiatry with development of a niche area of expertise in psycho-oncology and a strong exposure to palliative care. Training is focused at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), a world-renowned tertiary care cancer center. The psycho-oncology faculty who provide fellow supervision are nationally recognized leaders in their field.
Our Department of Psychiatry boasts strong and broad opportunities. Fellows partake in a scholarly project during their time in fellowship and have an opportunity to present this work at the end of the academic year.
Clinical fellows receive appointments to 91精品l and Harvard Medical School. All trainees shall be employees of 91精品l and will receive salary, fringe benefits and liability insurance coverage.
