History
The Brigham Skull Base Fellowship was initiated by Dr. Ossama Al-Mefty in 2010, carrying on a tradition since 1991. Building on this legacy, the fellowship has evolved to encompass not only complex skull base pathologies but also microneurosurgical training across a broad spectrum of neuro-oncology.
Goals and Objectives for Training
The Brigham Skull Base and Microneurosurgery Fellowship is designed to deliver rigorous, high-volume clinical training while cultivating the next generation of academic leaders in skull base and microneurosurgery. Fellows are expected to develop technical mastery in complex cranial and skull base procedures through dedicated operative experience and continuous anatomical refinement in the laboratory.
Fellows will develop deep expertise in skull base and microsurgical anatomy, the full spectrum of cranial base and neuro-oncological pathologies, and fluency with open and endoscopic operative approaches across. Emphasis is placed on surgical decision-making, operative planning, and fostering independent clinical judgment under expert faculty mentorship.
In parallel, fellows are expected to contribute meaningfully to academic scholarship. Each fellow is supported to generate peer-reviewed publications, lead scientific presentations, and engage with national and international skull base societies. Graduates of this program are equipped not only for technical excellence but also for impactful academic careers advancing the field.
Duration
The Skull Base and Microneurosurgery Fellowship is designed for a one-year clinical experience, with an option for a second year of dedicated laboratory experience for select candidates.
Program Certifications
Upon successful completion of program expectations, the fellow receives a certificate documenting their experience and successful completion of the fellowship.
Prerequisite Training/Neurosurgery Criteria
Fellows must have either completed or be in their senior year of an ACGME-accredited program or the equivalent in their home country and secured a high recommendation and demonstrated scholarly achievement.
